Serving since 1919, the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society is an open admission facility that takes in abandoned, abused, homeless, and unwanted animals that need tender loving care until they can find a permanent home. Our mission is to help these animals find their a permanent home, prevent animal cruelty, and educate people on the humane treatment of animals. We are unlike limited admission shelters, whereby animals can be turned away because of space, breed, or other reasons.

The SFAHS offers euthanasia services for those pets who are elderly, sick, or otherwise injured. We do not adopt out animals who are a public health risk or have a history of aggression towards people.
We make every effort to limit euthanasia in our shelter by using rescue groups, foster homes, our Paroled Pups program, and other collaborations with Special Needs pets. Feral Cats (those who have had little human contact, have lived in the wild and carry high disease)  are not adopted into families as they pose a public health risk.
If you surrender your pet, you give up all legal rights to that pet.  Once this is done, you will not be able to adopt the pet back. We do not give refunds.
The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society has a responsibility to the pet and to the public that the pet can live happily and safely in a home.

The SFAHS believes that altering your pet not only has many health benefits, but provides a way to control the overwhelming pet population. For this reason, we require all pets to be spayed or neutered within 30 days of adoption or the soonest age date (puppies and kittens sometimes have to wait until they are old enough). We do not adopt out pets to homes with unaltered pets.

The SFAHS takes in over 5000 animals a year. These animals are mostly dogs and cats. We also take in and adopt out rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, lizards, snakes, and birds.

The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society is a private 501c3 nonprofit organization whose mission it is to provide a safe haven for all animals in need. We rely totally on public funding. We do NOT receive funds from the United Way or Red Cross.

In order to continue to provide services to animals and families in the Sioux Falls and surrounding area, we rely on our community to help. In addition to monetary donations, we also need donations of items that will directly benefit the lives of the animals we are helping to find forever homes. If you would like to make a donation, you may either mail to:

Or make a gift online by clicking our DONATE ONLINE button for safe check out.

The animals and the staff depend on our volunteers. The volunteers help out with anything from dog walking to grooming to cat therapy. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, check out our volunteer page to find out how.

Since SFAHS is a non-profit organization, we depend on contributions, donations, a portion of sales from our retail store, PETAPALOOZA, and some of the fees for services that are provided. Keep reading to meet some of the staff that help the Humane Society provide ultimate care for our animals.
