What is OPEN admission?
The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society is an open admission shelter. We take in all animals regardless of their age, temperament, breed, health, behavior or aggressiveness.
We do not turn any animal away, nor do we selectively choose which animals we will take based on adoptability. We are unlike "limited admission shelters" who have made the choice to take animals according to breed, space, or other reasons.
We keep every animal as long as we possibly can and do not have any set time limits for how long an animal can remain available for adoption. This causes major stress on our budget, but we strive to provide the best outcomes for all animals in need, and therefore offer each pet a chance at a good life, and a good home.

To control the pet population, we have spayed and neutered over 5000 animals in the past couple of years. If a pet is unaltered at the time of adoption, we make arrangements to have the pet spayed or neutered as part of the adoption contract.

Over 5,800 pets are received at our shelter each year. The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society is not obligated to release the outcome information of animals surrendered to the shelter.

We are in need of monetary donations and donations of food and supplies to keep animals happy and healthy during their stay. Please support your Sioux Falls Area Humane Society today.
