Pet Therapy: is a program in which Humane Society volunteers bring puppies to nursing home facilities, hospitals and group homes throughout the area. The pets visit the residents, patients and staff.

Research has shown that spending time with animals reduces blood pressure & stress levels, raises morale and has numerous other health benefits. Humane Society volunteers and nursing staff have witnessed quick recoveries by patients after a pet therapy visit as well as patients responding to activity around them for the very first time!

Visits are done during regular Humane Society hours by a trained shelter volunteer. To see if Pet Therapy would be a worthwhile program for your organization, contact the Humane Society. The Humane Society touches thousands of lives each year through pet therapy visits.

Emergency Food: The Humane Society provides emergency food to pet owners who are struggling to provide proper nutrition for their pets due to unfortunate circumstances. This temporary assistance can help people get back on their feet.

Domestic Violence: Often individuals who are in domestic violence situations will not leave their pets behind to seek help for themselves. Free temporary boarding is provided for pets belonging to individuals who are in an unsafe home and are seeking a new safe place to live. Call the Humane Society at 605-338-4441 for details.

Educational Programs: The Humane Society offers a variety of educational programs designed to inform the community about proper pet care, the importance of spaying & neutering pets, animal cruelty and pet neglect issues. Shelter tours and classroom visits are available for students in the area. Or ask us to attend at meeting of your club, organization, or youth group to discuss the function of the Humane Society.
